The Constancia de Situación Fiscal, Mexico’s tax status certificate, is free, and SAT (the tax authority) offers five ways to get it. With your SAT password or e.firma (SAT’s electronic signature), you can download it in two minutes. Without either, you can request it with just your INE voter card and get it by email, or walk into any SAT office with no appointment.
Pick the route that fits what you have
-
If you have a password or e.firma
Download it on the SAT websiteSign in, click “Generar constancia” and you’re done.
-
If you need to send it from your phone
Get it in SAT MóvilThe app generates it and you share it straight away by email or messaging.
-
If you only have your INE
Request it through SAT IDNo password or e.firma. SAT emails you the PDF.
-
If you’d rather go in person
Visit a SAT officeNo appointment needed for this service. You leave with it printed.
No. No official channel issues it with just the CURP. SAT ID verifies you with your INE voter card, and the website and app require a password or e.firma.
What it is and why you’re asked for it
It’s SAT’s summary of your tax registration: your RFC (tax ID) with its homoclave, your name, your tax address and postal code, your tax regime (for example “Sueldos y Salarios,” salaried income) and your obligations. The top section is the Cédula de Identificación Fiscal, which carries a QR code for verification.
You’ll usually be asked for it at two moments. When you start a job, because the employer needs your exact RFC and regime to put you on payroll. And if you’re self-employed, because clients want to confirm your regime before paying you. If you have an RFC but can’t remember it, start with how to find your RFC with homoclave.
With a password or e.firma: on the SAT website
- Go to sat.gob.mx and open Trámites y servicios → Más trámites y servicios.
- Open Constancias, devoluciones y notificaciones and choose Constancia de Situación Fiscal.
- Sign in with your RFC and password, or with your e.firma (.cer and .key files and their password).
- Click Generar Constancia. It opens in a new window: save it as a PDF or print it.
SAT redesigned its website in 2026 and some labels have changed. Type “Constancia de Situación Fiscal” into the site’s search box to reach the same service.
In the SAT Móvil app
This is the most practical option when someone asks for it on the spot, at a job interview or the bank. Sign in to the app with your RFC and password, go to Mi RFC and tap Constancia. From there you can save, print or share it by email or messaging.
Without a password: SAT ID with your INE
SAT ID is SAT’s service for people without a password or e.firma. All you need is a valid INE voter card, an email address and a phone or computer with a camera.
- Check that your INE is valid with the INE voter list lookup. An expired card is the most common reason for rejection.
- Go to satid.sat.gob.mx and choose Constancia de Situación Fiscal con CIF.
- Enter your details and email, photograph your original INE card and record the short video it asks for.
- If SAT approves your request, the certificate arrives as a PDF by email.
It’s available to adult Mexican nationals, with an INE card issued in Mexico or abroad. If a disability prevents you from completing the steps, someone can help you, as long as you both appear in the video and the helper explains why.
You can try again after fixing the problem. It’s almost always one of three things: the INE isn’t valid, the photos have glare or cropped edges, or the video doesn’t show your whole face in good light.
Through the virtual office or at a SAT office
Virtual office. Book “Entrega de Constancias (oficina virtual)” at citas.sat.gob.mx. Before the appointment, upload a color PDF scan of both sides of your valid official ID. On the day, you join a video call with your camera and microphone on.
In person, no appointment. Go to any SAT office with your original, valid official ID. If you have an e.firma, your fingerprint is enough.
No business can demand it before invoicing you
In January 2026, SAT clarified in its press release 04/2026 (in Spanish) that the certificate is not required to issue an invoice (a CFDI, Mexico’s electronic invoice). A business only needs four details:
- your RFC,
- your name or company name,
- the postal code of your tax address,
- your tax regime.
Making an invoice conditional on handing over the certificate is an infraction, with fines of 21,420 to 122,440 pesos. If a business insists, just give them those four details. Whether you share the full certificate is up to you.
If you can’t generate it
You forgot your password
With a valid e.firma, create a new one on the SAT website under Herramientas de cumplimiento → Contraseña. Without an e.firma, request it through SAT ID, which emails you a link to set it. It must be 8 characters, letters and numbers only, and can’t be your RFC.
Your e.firma has expired
You don’t need it for the certificate: use your password, SAT Móvil or SAT ID. Renewing the e.firma is a separate procedure.
It shows your old address
The certificate reflects what SAT has on file that day. File the change of tax address notice (online, at an office or through the virtual office) and, once SAT records it, generate a new certificate.
Check it before you hand it over
- A 13-character RFC, including the homoclave.
- The postal code of your current tax address: it’s the one used on invoices.
- The right regime, for example “Sueldos y Salarios” if you only earn a salary.
- A recent issue date: many companies ask for one from the current month.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the Constancia de Situación Fiscal cost?
Nothing. It’s free through every official channel. If a website charges you to generate it, it isn’t SAT.
How long is it valid?
SAT gives it indefinite validity, but it shows your details as of the day you generate it. That’s why many companies ask for a recent one, which you can generate again for free as often as you like.
Can I get it without a password or e.firma?
Yes: through SAT ID with a valid INE voter card, through the virtual office by appointment, or at any SAT office with no appointment.
Can a business demand it before invoicing me?
No. Since SAT’s clarification in January 2026, a business only needs your RFC, name, postal code and tax regime.
